Make Sure You Stay Warm

This project looks at invisible labor through the repeated reminders many mothers give when it gets cold, such as “make sure you stay warm.” 
These words are said again and again and are often expected, but they still take effort each time.

The phrase is printed at a large scale on a silk scarf. When the fabric is laid flat, the text can be clearly read. Once worn, the words become obscured and turn into a pattern that wraps around the neck. Others can no longer read the message, but the wearer still knows it is there, making the care private and invisible.

Wearing the scarf also creates a physical sense of warmth, echoing what the words ask for. Once worn, the words are no longer visible, but their effect stays with you.
